FIT THE BEST, CHOOSE EVEREST?
It is certainly worth a quick look at these
photographs before you make a decision. We chose Everest to build our
conservatory because we believed in the advert that Everest was 'The Best'. The
Everest salesman certainly pushed home the point that we could rely on their
standards. So, we were happy to invest in what we thought was going to be the
best in workmanship and quality.
Below is the letter that was written to
Everest to let them know how badly the build was going. We didn't even get a
reply even though the letter was sent to the Managing Director, Line Manager and
our personal 'assistant'. It took five days to get a reply of any sort after
constantly badgering Everest over the 'phone. Here's the letter we sent to
Everest:
The work here is NOT going well, this
Email contains pictures of the, frankly, shoddy work. If the problem was
easily resolvable with a few 'modifications' then this would be part and
parcel of building work. The builders have had to recalled twice to redo the
brickwork around the door because the brickwork could not be resolved to the
plans, effectively the door was to far back even though the brickwork was
built exactly to plan. They have now come to a 'compromise' and have
deviated from the plans. This will require the fitters to add a 'trim piece'
to cover the gap between door and wall. This should not happen!
CONSTRUCTION
However, there seems to be fundamental
problems with the planning and design, one of the main problems being that
the valley gutter cannot drain because there is an uphill 'drop' to the
waste pipe. The gutter is also constructed incorrectly, you cannot rely on
sealant to seal a drain, it must be planned and constructed correctly. This
is not the case in this build.
The second major problem is that there is
a 20mm gap which indicates an error on the plans or the construction of the
window and door units. This gap is has been filled with expanding foam and
the internal trim parts are suspended using blocks of wood.
The lead-work looks like it has been
knitted in place, it is not symmetrical and does not look right. The fitter
said he 'hated doing Lead work', and I can understand his attitude
The floor was made to the wrong height,
the depth is too great for screed. We were told that 'someone' will come and
add some more insulation to bring it up higher. The builders said 'it will
be warmer because you will have two layers of insulation'. I would have just
liked to have seen it made correctly to start with.
There are also a couple of other examples
of shoddy work including the external 'crown' which has been cut with a
Stanley knife to fit, it is distorted and fails to align with the internal
trim.
PLANNING
We still do not know when the other
tradesmen are planned to arrive. We were told by the Project Manager that the other
trades will be here 'some time towards the end of next week'. I cannot
understand why there is no definite cohesive planning in place. It has
already been two weeks in construction and it looks like it is going to be
another two weeks yet before it is anywhere near completed.
CONCLUSION
This has been a mess from start to
finish. We want action to resolve these issues. If it means tearing it down
and starting again then so be it. The work will have to be completed in a
single day due to the fact that we don't have an interior wall anymore.
The salesman said that the
conservatory would be completed 'in around 4 days'.
The salesman said that we
should choose Everest because they are 'The Best'.
From this experience I do not see any
promises being kept.
Please get the surveyors back here to
find out what went wrong. I do not need platitudes from the Project Manager,
I am not stupid and I can see when fundamental mistakes have been made. The
conservatory has been constructed incorrectly, possibly by design.
I will take this further and higher up
the Everest Organisation in I have to, please resolve these issues quickly.
Since this letter was written we have had the
builder's back again to redo the brickwork around the door....they fitted
bricks in the wrong colour, and they went downhill! So they did it again,
and then they had to come back again to redo more brickwork that had
enormous gaps between bricks.
After that we had a new set of Everest fitters who
proceeded to tear the whole thing down again, and seeing that the original
fitters had taken down our Sitting room wall, they boarded up our house with
plywood!:

Our lovely garden has now been turned
into an Everest scrap yard:
Here's a picture of the method Everest
used to seal the windows in place.....lots and lots of sealant! The windows
should be sealed by design NOT by pints of sealant. This picture shows the
precision parts that meet under the crown:

I will post more of this story is it
develops........
